Here are the round and draw dates for the 2019-2020 Champions League in European football.
From an English perspective, we know right now that Liverpool and Manchester City will be in the competition. The other two spots are (as of May 2 2019) up for grabs. I will update this as we know more.
I won’t go into much detail here, because most of my readers won’t care beyond which English team is playing when. But there are three qualifying rounds from June 25 through August 13.
Then there is a playoff round with legs on August 20/21 and August 27/28. This will almost certainly include an English club; last year it was Burnley, who lost at this stage to a team from Greece.
Group Stage (32 Teams)
The group-stage draw is held on August 29. This puts everybody into eight groups of four, and they all play each other home and away over six dates:
- September 17/18
- October 1/2
- October 22/23
- November 5/6
- November 26/27
- December 10/11
The top two from each group advance to the round of 16, and the third-place teams drop into the Europa League.
Round of 16
The draw for this round is held on December 16. Everybody plays two legs, home and away, with total goals advancing, the first tiebreaker being away goals. These games are on:
- February 18/19
- February 25/26
- March 10/11
- March 17/18
The quarterfinal and semifinal draw is held on March 20. Again, everybody plays two legs, home and away, with total goals advancing, the first tiebreaker being away goals. These games are on:
- April 7/8
- April 14/15
Two legs, total goals, away-goal tiebreaker:
- April 28/29
- May 5/6
